Telford & Wrekin Council has announced that it will host its second Partnership for Jobs Fair on Wednesday 18 March 2015, followed by a Partnership for Careers event on Thursday 19 March 2015, at The International Centre.

The first jobs fair, held in March 2014, attracted about 4,000 job seekers and over 100 businesses.

The Council has committed to reducing high youth unemployment levels in the borough and has invested £1.3m in its two year programme.

Last year the Council launched the Job Box, which pulls together a range of education, training and employment support.

As a result of the measures taken by the Council, youth unemployment in Telford and Wrekin is decreasing at a greater rate than the regional and national rates with 1,000 unemployed 16 – 24 year olds finding work in the last year.

The event will highlight opportunities and support services for local people looking for employment and apprenticeships, as well as assisting local employers who are looking to recruit.

In addition to the jobs fair, the Council will this year host an employer led Skills Festival the following day for young people to find out more about career paths. The event will have interactive activities for delegates to try out to give a flavour of the various careers on offer.

A number of local and national employers have confirmed their attendance at the Skills Festival, including Tesco, the NHS, Wrekin Housing Trust and Faccenda.

Students from local schools and colleges are encouraged to attend the Skills Festival with a further opportunity to attend in the early evening with their parents/carers. The event will provide the perfect chance to discover career options, routes into employment and talk to people who are in those jobs.

Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Employment and Skills, said: “After the success of last year’s event, we’re pleased to be repeating the jobs fair this year.

“The addition of the Skills Festival broadens the appeal of the event and will provide more careers advice.

“Last year more than 70 of the 100 businesses who attended recruited from the jobs fair, this year, we hope even more people will find work.

“This event is set to be a fantastic opportunity for local people to find information on job vacancies, training opportunities and advice and support services available to them.

“The Council is fully committed to ensuring that every 16 - 24 year old in the borough, who is seeking employment or training, is fully supported on their journey.”

The Partnership for Jobs fair will be open 11am – 7pm on Wednesday 18 March 2015 at the The International Centre.

The Partnership for Careers’ Skills Festival will be open to schools and colleges 10am – 3pm and to the general public from 3pm–7pm on Thursday 19 March, also at the TIC.
